Mouzon Design

Katrina Thin Cottages have illustrious predecessors like the New Orleans Shotgun pictured above; they must be no more than 16’ wide if they are to be transported over the highway; transportability is a big part of their versatility. As a result, as noted earlier, they were the first Katrina Cottages designed in the days after the storm because the architects had the shotgun model with which they were familiar. The big difference between Shotguns and Katrina Thin Cottages is the fact that children no longer tolerate people walking through their bedrooms to get to bedrooms further back in the house, so all of the Katrina Thin Cottages have side halls around all except bunk rooms.

It may be of interest to note that the Model T Cottage was the first Katrina Cottage ever designed. Steve designed it immediately after the storm; some of the drawings of the design were sent out to the New Urban Guild architects that designed the next wave of Katrina Cottages in the days leading up to the mega-charrette held in Biloxi, Mississippi in mid-October, 2005. This was the largest single event in the history of town planning, addressing the entire Mississippi coast in one week.
